『アガスティアの葉』

『アガスティアの葉』という本を、友達から薦められたのは去年のこと。
5月に日本に帰国したときに、ブックオフでたまたま見つけ
やっと読んでみたのですが、この本、はまりました。
おもしろい
ヨガとかインドの宗教とかに興味がない人でも、
読んでみておもしろいと感じる本だと思います。

タイトルの”アガスティアの葉”とは

聖者アガスティアが太古に残した、個人の運命に対する予言が書かれているとされる葉。
南インドのタミル語文化圏に保管されている。

まさに各個人の運命が書かれている葉がインドに存在するらしい。
この本は、著者が自分個人のアガスティアの葉を見つけた
体験談を記したもの。
そしてその葉には彼の人生について、前世、来世も含めて
全て書かれていたのです。
普通はこんなことは信じられないこと。
紀元前3000年の聖者がどうやって各個人の運命など分かるのか？
今現在何億という人が存在する中、各個人の運命を書いていたら、
ものすごい膨大な量になってしまい、あり得ないこと。
ですが、この聖者は「誰がいつその葉を読みに来るか」、
まで予言しており、よって読みに来る人の分のみの葉が
あるらしい（それでも膨大な量にはなると思いますが）。

この著者の体験談を信じる、信じないは各個人の自由。
この本はノンフィクションだ、と謳っていますが、
信じない人がいても納得です。
だって本当に信じられないようなお話ですから。

でも今までインド関連の書物を読んできた私にとっては、
あり得ない話じゃない！
と思っています。実は密かに、インドまでいって私個人の
アガスティアの葉を探し出したい！とまで思ったり。

今までにこの本を読んで、実際に葉を探し出した人がいるみたいですが、
自分の運命を先に知ってしまうことが必ずしも良いことだとは
言えません。もし酷い未来が来ると予言された場合、
落ち込むだろうし、ほんとにそれが実現されてしまうのかと
びくびくしてしまうこともあるだろうし。
どんな運命でも受け止められるだけの度胸がなければ、
アガスティアの葉を読むことはかなりむごい事になると思います。
自分にそれだけの度胸があるかどうかは。。。？？？

ちなみに著者は科学者でカトリック教徒。
なぜかインドのアユ-ルヴェーダも学んでいる方。
（1冊目の本を読んでいないので、なぜそうなのか分からない）
そんな科学者がインドのスピリチュアルな世界にはまっている、
というのはとても興味深いです

"How to Get Fat Without Really Trying"

This documentary was aired some years ago but the reality hasn't changed much I think. Very educational. What we choose to eat and the low activity level causes the obesity of course, however, we must be aware how government is making this epidemic worse. Government policy on agriculture does not encourage the healthy eating at all (as a matter of fact, opposite!); no policy on advertisements targeting children etc...
Every single American should watch this documentary

"Skid Row"

Documentary description:
“Skid Row” is a 50-square block area in downtown Los Angeles where an average of 90,000 homeless and transient people live on any given night. More than just a place - it’s a way of life, a mind set, the last resort for those who have given up on society and, in many cases, themselves. In the feature documentary SKID ROW, Pras Michel - one third of the successful hip-hop band The Fugees - lives on the streets of Skid Row for nine straight days and nights as a homeless person. The entire time he and his crew are undercover, using surveillance cameras. His journey is a difficult one, riddled with hunger, exposure to the elements, criminals, drugs and danger. It is also life-changing...as Pras learns not only how to fend for himself, but discovers the dark, very human and, at times, humorous underbelly of Los Angeles.


This documentary was an eye-opening to me. I've been to LA twice, stayed in downtown and walked around while I was there. I never knew about Skid Row, which was only a several blocks away from where I've been to!!
There are more than 10000 homeless people living in Skid Row. Drag addicts, ones who lost a job, and others.. how they are living on a street is really awful. It may be their fault to end up there, but some had no choice(losing jobs and all). This is a very serious problem in US. Homeless people become dehumanized there. Literally.

Corpus Christi -聖体の祝日-

先週の木曜日は、キリストの聖体の祝日。
主にカトリック系が祝うらしいのですが、実際はどうだかよく分からない
このお祝い事は、「聖体の秘跡の力を称える」ためのもの。
「聖体の秘跡」のことを「エウカリスト」とも言いますが、これはイエス・キリストの最後の晩餐に由来するキリスト教の儀式。
で、何のことなのかというと、最後の晩餐のときに、

”イエスはパンを取り、「これがわたしのからだである」といい、杯をとり「これがわたしの血である」といって弟子たちに与えた。”

のだそうで、そして

”キリスト教徒はこの儀式を行うことで、そこにキリストが現存するという信仰を保持してきた”

なのだそう。カトリックのミサはこの「エウカリスト」を中心に行われているので、やっぱり聖体の祝日のお祝いはカトリックが大々的

アメリカではこの祝日をCorpus Christiと呼びます（ラテン語で「キリストの体」という意味）。木曜日が正式なCorpus Christiなのですが、アメリカではその後に来る日曜日に祝います。

私はキリスト教徒でもなければカトリックでもないのですが、カトリック教会に行きCorpus Christiのミサに参加してきました（←友達に誘われた）
実はカトリック教会のミサには前々から参加してみたかったので、友達から誘われたときに即OK。貴重な体験をしました。ただ１つ問題が。。。儀式中、一体何が起こっているのか、正直ちんぷんかんぷん
周りに合わせて、立ったり座ったりの繰り返し。後部にはオーケストラとコーラスの人たちがいて、ミサの進行に合わせて曲を弾いたりしていたのですが、それも意味がよく分かりませんでした（コーラスは全てラテン語！）

一時間半もの儀式のあとは、みんなで行列を作ってぞろぞろと外へ。何かの行進か？、と思いきや、これはキリストが最後の夜、オリーブ山まで弟子たちと一緒に歩いたことを再現をしていた、のだと思います（不確か）。
奥が深すぎてよく分かりませんが、１つ感じたことは、カトリックがいかに伝統や儀式を重んじているかということ。今までに様々なプロテスタント系の教会に行った事がありますが（バプティスト、プレスビタリアンなどなど）、それらとは大違い

イモージェン・ヒープ

Hide and Seek ~ Imogen Heap

最近発掘したアーティスト、Imogen Heap. "Hide and Seek"という歌がお気に入り。この曲を聞いているとなぜか切なくなる。。。すべてのエモーションがこの一曲の中に秘められている感じ。心の底から絞り出すような声で歌い、また時にはささやくように歌い、彼女の感情が直に伝わってきます。。。
ちなみに、Hide and Seekの入っているアルバム、「ひとりごと~Speak For Yourself~」はどの曲も最高！

"The Future of Food"

Just saw this documentary free online! This is about the genetically modified foods. Just like the other documentary, this talks about Monsanto, corrupted FDA, struggling farmers etc... And I learned more. Now they are planning to develop genetically modified live stocks (chicken etc), fish, trees... where does this end?

And even more, they are introducing the new technology, the terminator gene, so called "suicide seeds". What it does is that the plant suicides itself and their seeds will be sterile. This technology will be used for the genetically modified seeds only (so only GE crops die, not others). What if those genes spread into the wild? possibly cross pollinated and cause the sterility throughout the world??? The company like Monsanto does not think about the ecosystems nor consequences which could follow. We must stop this monster NOW!!!

Faith is a gift?

I just saw the movie, Angels and Demons, and I enjoyed it very much despite of a bad review on this movie by critics. Many said this was better than the Da Vinci Code because it's fast pace. Yes, it was an exciting movie. Lots of explosions, actions, etc. But I really did not care much for that. I enjoyed it because of the theme itself, science and religion.

Science and religion have been my interest from a long time ago. Seems they do not go together and almost impossible to believe in both But I do So when I heard that this movie/book was about science vs. religion, I knew I had to see it!

The story was very interesting, but what caught my attention in the movie was the conversation between Langdon (Harvard professor & symbologist) and McKenna (Camerlengo in Roman Catholic church, an official of the Papal court):


McKenna: Do you believe in God, sir?

Langdon: Father, I simply believe that religion...

McKenna: I did not ask if you believe what man says about God, I asked if you believe in God.

Langdon: I'm an academic. My mind tells me I will never understand God.

McKenna: And your heart?

Langdon: Tells me I'm not meant to. Faith is a gift that I have yet to receive.


Faith is a gift? That's very interesting to hear. If so, I feel like I have received it but maybe a half way.
My religious friend claimed that faith was NOT a gift; simply some people are prone to be religious and some are not. Maybe so or maybe not. I have no idea what the truth... What I know is that probably I will never know all the truth because I believe God is INFINITE and there is no way our FINITE mind can understand infinite God... (hence I am agreeing with Langdon?!)

アートフェア第一弾

ミシガンでいち早くアートフェアが行われる Mt.Clemens。
出店数はあまり多くないのですが、
行った事のない街だったので行ってみました。
ここのところ、肌寒い日が続いていたのですが、
この日は暑いくらいの天気
特になにも買わなかったのですが、それでもアートを満喫

東京観光

アメリカに帰ってくる前日に
大学時代からのお友達、
珠吉（←彼女のブログ名）に会い、
一緒に東京タワーに行きました。
千葉出身、東京でも働いた経験があるというのに
東京タワーに今まで一度も行ったことがなかったので
一度は行きたい思っていたところ。
珠吉は、私のわがままにいつも付き合ってくれる
私の親友の一人。いつもありがと〜。
東京タワーは夜景がきれいと聞いていましたが、
昼間でも十分に景色を楽しめました。
残念ながら富士山は見えませんでしたが。。。
でも願いが叶って、大満足
