I watched the documentary, WALMART: the high cost of low price, and I saw the reality of that mega retail store. The truth behind their low price... it's so harsh. Yes, I occasionally go to Walmart to buy things because they are cheaper. But I never knew how it was possible and how it affects the community.
Low price is the sacrifice of so many things. Walmart is understaffed purposely; made their employees work for free (overtime without pay); employees volunteer that because they are threatened to be fired constantly. Cheap pay; not good health care available. It's just a terrible condition to work there. Another big reason why price is low is that they use manpower in China. Walmart has many factory workers there; they are made to work for day and night, and they are making only $3 a day! It's like there is no human right at all.
Then the affect of Walmart to the community... the day Walmart arrives to a community, it's a day many small/family businesses die. Walmart steals the customers and destroy the community. And what made me more furious is that the government is helping them! Walmart gets millions subsidy dollars from the government and because of that, public schools are forced to be closed; the fire department does not have enough money to keep it up...
And beside destroying the small businesses, Walmart is destroying the environment as well at the same time. They claim they do everything to avoid, but they are not keeping their promises; violating the Clean Water Act! That is not acceptable for me!
Even though their price is low and attractive, I cannot agree with their principles at all. I'd never go to their stores and drop a penny ever again!!
