The article in today's newspaper reported their renewals of contract. $100K/year, that's sweet! In addition, 9 weeks of paid vacation. Even sweeter!!
But here is a trick. Very few people get that job. Very few openings. Besides, you have to be one of the best musicians!!!
I happened to meet this young cellist who just finished his degree this summer. He told me that getting a job in the orchestra is very difficult, there will probably be only 5 or so openings in a whole year (and let me point that not in DSO but including all small town/city orchestras). He said there are many people WAITING for that opportunity.
Hearing that fact, 100K/yr might be too low for those special "selected" ones, because they are really one of few among thousands of hopefuls...

And just think what they had to invest to get there...and what all they have to sacrifice after getting there... They probably have to practice sooooo hard, travel around wherever they are told, handles pressures of playing and satisfying the audiences, etc etc. I have so much respect for those who can hold that kind of position and provide all that they are demanded of. They must be talented, lucky, and mentally strong.
Tamakichi, you are right! I'm sure they are investing a whole lot to get there! I too have a lot of respect for them.
